The FixIt Files: Ready Your Ceiling Fans for Cool Summer Breezes

Ceiling fans are the unsung heroes of summer comfort—but only if they’re working efficiently! Before the Colorado heat really kicks in, it’s time to give those blades a good clean and flip that switch for proper airflow. Here’s how to get it done (and why it matters!).

 Step 1: Clean Those Blades

Dusty fan blades aren’t just unsightly—they actually spread dust through the room and can make your fan less efficient. Here’s a quick, no-fuss method:

  • Turn off the fan.
  • Grab an old pillowcase. Slide it over one blade at a time and pull the dust right off. The pillowcase traps the grime inside instead of spreading it around.
  • Wipe down each blade with a damp cloth and mild cleaner.
  • Don’t forget the motor housing and pull chains—those get grimy too!

Step 2: Reverse the Fan Direction

This is the part most people forget—and it makes a huge difference in how cool your room feels.

  • In summer, your ceiling fan should spin counterclockwise (when you look up at it). This pushes cool air down, creating a wind-chill effect.
  • There’s usually a small switch on the fan’s motor housing. Flip it while the fan is off, then turn it back on and check the direction.

By doing this simple switch, you can actually raise your thermostat a few degrees and still feel just as cool—saving energy and money.
